Spring Quilt Market Continued

Monday we talked about the new trends in fabric and are we ever excited to be bringing new collections to you. Today We want to tell you about the newest thing in quilting. Minis are going to be huge. Every booth we went in featured these miniature quilts, and how great is a quilt that you can start and finish in the midst of a busy life. Sue ordered lots of patterns for these mini quilts, we'll be making them into kits soon.

Little Wallet

I was itching to sew something but I only had an hour between cleaning the coat closet and having to get lunch on the table. I was also looking for something small to carry my business cards in, so that when I pull one out I'm not flashing my cash around. I decided to try the "little wallet" and holy smokes, was it ever perfect. The entire project took me about thirty minutes.

You can buy kits for this pattern on our website. Click HERE for the kit
or HERE for the pattern.
These little patterns are termed "sewing cards" and there's something about them that's so cute. The instructions were easy to follow.

I picked this sort of sixties fabric because it's fun, summery and a bit vintage. It turned out to be the perfect size for my business cards (and those store cards you use for points, I can never find them in wallet so I thought this was a good solution).

See how well it matches my wallet.

Definitely a fast and rewarding project. These would be great little presents and it uses up lots of bits of fabric. I imagine I'll be getting a lot more use out this pattern.

Patterns, Kits, Basics, Oh My!

I hope all of you that are mother's had a lovely day filled with grateful children and yummy desserts. It's finally getting warm here, and I mean very warm, hot even. I (Jessie) spent the weekend in my garden putting in flowers and filling my window boxes. I also got the plants and seeds in my vegetable garden, I'm cautiously hopeful about that (crazy to me that those rows of dirt could turn into food).

In the shop we've gotten in a lot of new things. Moda Christmas fat eigth bundles if you can believe that! Despite the heat and glorious out doors they are beautiful and if your into planning ahead these are for you. We also received Moda's Eerie collection so you can plan for Halloween too!

We're now carrying Peppered Cotton solids in a variety of colors. I love how textured they look, and the names they all have are really sweet (I mean "Aubergine" how lovely sounding is that?). Click HERE for details.

Along with our shipment of "Ribbon Creative Suite" patterns we've gotten in two other new patterns the "Little Wallet" and "Wish Bird". All three of these projects are quick just what summer time needs. No one wants to sit in their sewing room for hours, we want something fast and fun, these are just the ticket. We also have kits available for the wallet for an even faster project.

I love that things are blooming outdoors and in our shop as well. Have a wonderful dirt, and fabric (though not together) filled week.

New Quilt Patterns

We just got in a crate full of new quilt patterns from Glorious Color. The nice thing about these patterns is they're to scale you don't need to use a copy machine or anything like that. And the patterns are so beautiful. Just a hint of traditional. Click on the caption link under the picture for more details.

Mariner's Compass

Flower Basket Medallion
Flower Garden

LollyPop Trees

Flower Pots

Princess Feathers
Stars and Sprigs

Victory Garden
These are so great. When I saw the Star and Sprigs it reminded me of the antique Civil War Quilts my Grammy always had, that created an ache in my heart. I love the Mariner's compass, though, I think that might not be the best quilt for a novice to begin on. And how about Victory Garden? I love anything with a WWII vibe.

The winners of our headband giveaway are Courtney Smallwood and Bethany Clay! YEAH! I'll get them in the mail to you soon.

Anniversary outfit

I finally cleaned my sewing room. It took some doing and about half way through I really needed a nap. I had coffee instead. There's something about an organized space that just gets the creative juices flowing, which then leads to an unorganized space. Weird.

I got out my patterns and fabrics for my new summer projects, even though the sky is terribly grey with low angry clouds, decidedly not summery. I have a vision in my head for this first outfit. A pencil skirt with a light flowy blouse. There's always a risk when you create; will the product look anything like what you imagined? Will it look good on you (or your couch, or bed etc) will it look better? When it does work I suppose the risk is what makes the reward so worth it. I'm hoping to wear this for my anniversary dinner, if all goes according to plan... The floral blouse fabric is from Robert Kaufman and is as light as a dream, holy smokes does it feel good. I stumbled upon a pattern that matches what I was imagining pretty close in a book I already had (huzza!) The Colette Sewing Handbook I love Colette's instructions, they are always easy to follow. Sometimes I think they're sizing is off, which can be really frustrating. The blouse will be fine and I'm hoping since I'm using knit for the skirt it will be more forgiving.

This second outfit I'm not as sure about. I bought this knit fabric online because I have a vision of several comfortable knit dresses in my closet for summer. I picked this particular fabric because it was 100% cotton (great for summer right?) and I loved the teal color. It is so heavy! Not at all what I expected. And, the fabric has snagged in a couple places when I pre washed it! It was not terribly expensive so I'm still going to use it and hope for the best. At the very least it will give me an idea if this dress pattern is worth making again. I hope it is because I prefer dresses and skirts over the way shorts look as long as it's comfortable. These patterns aren't cheap, either, so using it again is something I hope to do.

The Moneta dress pattern from Colette. A pattern made for knits
and comes with a bunch of collar options.
This brings me to my conundrum. How do you pick out clothing fabric? Cottons are easy, I work in the shop with the most fantastic cottons ever, but if you want something like knits or bottom weights the choices in stores are pretty slim. If you have tips I'd love to hear them. Especially for summer fabrics, primarily knits. I always thought cotton was the best for summertime but maybe there's better options?

Don't forget about our headband giveaway. All you have to do is enter a comment on this post to be entered to win. We'll choose a winner Monday.

I hope all your sewing plans are successful
